The vibrations from the turbo- prop plane relaxed me as , PDGH WKH KRXU ORQJ ÁLJKW from Miami to Freeport. The erratic buzzing reminded me of the old Lazy Boy lounge chair that my uncle Herbert used to have in his study. This was a rare chance to close my eyes and prepare myself for what I was about to encounter.
Before I could snore loud enough to annoy the person sitting next to me, we were DOUHDG\ LQ ÀQDO DSSURDFK I could already see the Bahama blue waters and beaches that have made the island famous. A quick pass through customs and a 10-minute cab ride later, I was already at the Pelican Bay Resort in Port Lucaya. After checking in and getting my bearings, I began to anticipate what the next few days had in store for me. What would I talk about afterwards the most? Would it be the dolphins? The sharks? Or, would it be something completely unexpected?
We could not have picked a better time to travel. As mild as the Winters are in Atlanta, January is still cold, grey, and damp. Each day on Grand Bahama Island was a "Bahamas Ministry of Tourism" day. Sunny, in the high 70s, the ocean barely rippled, and the scuba gods had granted us top- to-bottom visibility. This was NOT the week that had the divemasters saying "You should have been here last week".

Dolphins
Did you know that Grand Bahama Island is the only place on Earth where you can dive with captive dolphins in the open ocean? Actually, the term "captive" isn't fair. The dolphins here could easily escape their pens if they desired. From time to time, males have been caught "sneaking" into female pens for an evening of indiscretion. In fact, there have been many occasions where members of the UNEXSO pod of dolphins have encountered a wild pod, and have left for days at a time, but they always make their way back home.
Through UNEXSO, there are several different ways visitors can have incredible hands-on experiences with dolphins.
